Endodontics

Root canal treatment is needed when a tooth is damaged and the tissue inside the tooth’s root is exposed to infection. An infected root can cause toothache, discolouration of the tooth, swelling, and irritation around the tooth. To relieve the symptoms and prevent the tooth from being lost, we perform a root canal.

How does root canal treatment work?

We perform a root canal to remove the infected tissue inside the tooth. This tissue, called the pulp, is made up of blood vessels and nerve tissue. To remove the pulp, we make a tiny hole in the tool and extra the pulp with special tools. After the pulp is removed, we sanitize the area to stop infection and repair the tooth with a filling.

Because the tooth is damaged, it needs to be restored with a dental crown. After we fill the tooth we place a temporary crown, which remains in place until your permanent crown is ready. Once the permanent crown has been produced, we remove the temporary crown and cement the permanent one in place.

Aren’t root canals painful?

No. With modern anesthetic and treatment methods, a root canal is no more painful than getting a tooth filled.

If you’re experiencing severe toothache and swelling, your tooth may be infected. Call our office to book an examination.
